TRADITIONAL USUI REIKI : The Master Teacher
Dr. Mikao Usui is credited with re-discovering Reiki in the late 1800’s and creating the Westernized Traditional Usui Reiki, the most well known form of practicing Reiki.
This potent, yet gentle way of tapping into the Universal Life Force Energy, provides protection for both facilitator and recipient. The energy flows through the facilitator into the recipient as needed.
Believed to have begun his education as a child in the Tendai Monastery on Mt Himi near Kyoto, Japan. In the early history of Reiki in America, the story of Reiki and Dr. Usui was distilled to appeal to the Western mind. More and more we are discovering the many layers of Dr. Usui, his discoveries, practices and teachings.
For now, I will recount the basic story as taught to me.
Dr. Mikao was believed to be a Buddhist Monk. As a child he studied in a Tendai monastery on Mt. Himi near Kyoto, Japan. In his search for healing techniques, he is thought to have studied Christianity in the United States, ancient Chinese texts and Indian Sanskrit.
In the early 1900’s, he combined this knowledge with certain meditations which led to his re-discovery of energy healing techniques. The Japanese word ‘Reiki” was used to point outthat his teaching worked with ‘spiritual energy.’ Once his teaching came to the US in 1938, they became known as “Reiki”, the system.
New aspects of Dr. Usui and his teachings have recently been discovered and incorporated into the Reiki practice. Reiki remains a systematic “key” for accessing energy healing.
No one is absolutely certain where Reiki originated. Energy healing techniques are part of our multi-cultural experience. Caves used for the ancient practices of energy healing are found throughout the world.
Recent anthropological discoveries (see history channel) have provided new insights regarding some of the ancient civilizations and our ‘modern’ medical practices.
It is believed that Reiki, as with most gentle esoteric practices for accessing energy for healing and re-balancing purposes, was buried within “mystery schools’ and passed from Master to Initiate by word of mouth until it eventually disappeared.
